BikeSafe is a national, police-led initiative which aims to increase the awareness of road safety and create a desire to learn about safer riding. The main thrust of the initiative is to reduce road casualties.

During 2004 - 2005, a total of 910 motorcyclists were injured on South Yorkshire's roads. Of these 22 died, 263 were seriously injured and 633 slightly injured. We acknowledge that these figures are too high and since then South Yorkshire Police's Motorcycle Wing have taken an active role in reducing these figures by BikeSafe in the county. 2008 -2009 has seen the figures improve and in total there were 666 casualties. A total of 25 people died, 193 were seriously injured and 448 were slightly injured.

We continue to work with the motorcyclists of South Yorkshire and surrounding areas to promote safer motorcycling with BikeSafe being a key area of rider education.

South Yorkshire Police run BikeSafe courses at various dates throughout the year and each course covers the following topics:

Attitudes

Positioning

Hazard perception

Cornering

Braking

Collision causes

Observation

Bike control

Overtaking and correct use of gears

South Yorkshire Police BikeSafe Team

South Yorkshire Police BikeSafe courses take one full day to complete and include a number of classroom sessions before taking a guided ride-out with a police advanced motorcyclist.
Each particpant receives:

  • a taste of safer riding techniques
  • a training needs assessment
  • a certificate of completion
  • an opportunity to benefit from further incentives

Most importantly BikeSafe will help to identify motorcyclists' strengths and weaknesses in preparation for training by recognised providers.

The courses cost £50.00 to cover administration charges and lunch and any left over money will go to fund future BikeSafe initiatives.

All courses are held at the South Yorkshire Police Operations Complex, Europa Link, Sheffield, S9 1XX.

In addition to the courses South Yorkshire Police's BikeSafe team attend open days and shows around the country  with their mobile BikeSafe display promoting the road safety message.
