South Wales BikeSafe

South Wales Police have a strong history with Bike Safe and have a highly passionate team made up of motorcyclists from our Road Safety team as well as the Roads Policing Unit.  We are also supported by Police Support Volunteers (PSVs) who hold an advanced riding qualification and have undergone training and assessments by our local co-ordinators.

Our motorcyclists have a wealth of riding experience and knowledge in a number of areas from Roadcraft and riding to a system, Escorting vehicles, collision investigation and Royal & VIP escorting.  The classroom session will be led by the co-ordinators who also have qualifications and experience in teaching and motorcycle training at all levels.

Our team are all bikers at heart, and we make our workshops as enjoyable as possible whilst giving the best opportunity for riders to improve their skills and make them get the most from their bikes whilst staying safe.

Who is Bike Safe for?

Bike Safe is for anyone who has passed their DVSA test and is interested in becoming a safer rider.  It doesn’t matter if you have been riding for 30 days or 30 years, we have something for everyone.  Bike Safe is great for new riders and riders returning to biking after some time away.  It is designed to be an introduction to post-test training.

What to expect.

Once you book you will receive an email giving you access to online learning.  This includes videos to watch that introduce you to the way we approach riding and start you on your journey to become a safer rider.

The workshop day starts with a classroom session where one of our coordinators will take you through topics including Information gathering, hazard awareness, corners & bends, overtaking and Filtering.  The session is a group discussion where we share some of our experience and introduce you to ways of approaching things systematically, leaving nothing to chance.

After the classroom session we go for lunch as a group (lunch not provided) and you get to know your allocated observer.

After lunch we go out onto the beautiful roads of South Wales for an observed ride.  This section is normally 2 riders to 1 observer, and we have plenty of stops to discuss the ride and reflect on how it went, what went well and any areas for improvement.  The observed ride is your opportunity to focus on topics you may find a challenge and try to implement things you were shown in the classroom.

The day ends with a roadside debrief, somewhere close to your home.  You will be given feedback by your observer and ideas on how you could continue to improve your riding after Bike Safe.  This may include signposting to post-test training with organisations such as RoSPA and IAM Roadsmart, or DVSA Schemes such as the Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS).

What do you need?

You must hold a full Category A, A1 or A2 licence and have a road legal motorcycle with up-to-date VEL, MOT (If required) and Insurance.  On the day you must be wearing motorcycle PPE including a helmet, protective jacket and trousers, motorcycle footwear and gloves. You will also need appropriate clothing for the weather.

Most importantly, we ask that you bring a positive attitude and an open mind.
