The overarching philosophy is safety, safety, safety
We met PC Hutchings (Northamptonshire Police) from the Northamptonshire BikeSafe team at a comfortable office in Welford. This was ideally suited in relation to where we lived and the intended route. After formal introductions and ice breakers to make the two of us at ease, we ran through the background, content and ethos of BikeSafe.
Our Observer did not miss an opportunity to repeat and emphasise the overarching philosophy of safety, safety, safety – with good evidenced examples and methodology to mitigate the risks. This built upon and reinforced the online modular eLearning.
Thereafter off we went out onto the roads for our observed ride. The route selected incorporated roads that were challenging, thought provoking, interesting and completely new to the pair of us. This made me think about and concentrate upon IPSGA throughout. PC Hutchings observed our riding and picked suitable times to talk to us about how we were doing with regards to the key elements of IPSGA and advisory feedback.
For instance I was clearly, notionally a ‘position two’ rider, my mirrors were awkwardly positioned which unnecessarily increased my head movements. These pointers and many other aspects of my riding will now remain with me going forward.
We had adequate and suitable breaks. These were particularly appropriate because we had a couple of hours of rain. It enabled us to warm up, dry off and debrief what we’d done.
At the conclusion PC Hutchings debriefed us and emphasised the improvement he’d seen in us as the day progressed. Overall it was without reservation a fabulous, worthwhile experience and despite having ridden for countless years, it does reinforce the adage that one never stops learning. I’ve shared my experience with my motorcycle friends and given my feedback. A number have already indicated that they would like to do attend BikeSafe.
